Sony Honda Mobility revealed Afeela prototype EV at CES.

Three years after showing off its first concept car, Sony, with partner Honda, has revealed its electric car brand and a concept that previews the first model. Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), formed by the electronics and automobile major, will create a brand called Afeela to market its electric cars.

The concept car, which bears no name other than the Afila brand, looks quite different from the original Sony concepts, except for the sedan-like vehicle with satin gray paint. The shape is very clean and minimalist, with as few creases, curves and lines as possible. The front and rear lights are simplified down to the main bars. It all looks extremely aerodynamic, too. The whole thing is reminiscent of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 if you simplify it even further. And on the topic of Hyundai, the Afeela is roughly the same length and width as a Korean sedan.

Although the exterior has some unique features. Notably between the original headlight units is the front "media bar". It is a screen that can display all kinds of information and even personalized ones. Although we suspect that government regulators may limit how customizable that panel can be. Of course it could also provide information about charging and possibly pedestrians as well, especially since this car is aiming for some autonomy.

The interior is as minimalistic as the exterior, but with the ever-popular full-width bank of screens, including for the side mirrors. The rear seats also have individual screens. Sony emphasizes on offering all kinds of entertainment to the passengers. It didn't say anything about installing a PlayStation in the car, but it did mention that it's partnering with Epic Games to develop entertainment options.

Sony also talked about some aspects of the technology and features of the car. The car has 45 cameras and sensors, all for use with in-vehicle security systems from Sony, which are being developed by Honda The car had four computer chips. Sony claims that the car will be capable of Level 3 autonomous driving in some situations, although this will require driver attention in some situations, especially urban driving. In these circumstances Level 2 Driver Assistance will be available.

No details were given about the battery or the motors. The car is all-wheel drive, though, and we'd imagine it uses the typical dual motor layout, one at each end. Looking at the specifications, the rear tires of the car are wider, so we can bet that there is a bigger motor in the rear. The front uses double wishbone suspension, and the rear is an independent multi-link setup.

Afila cars will be primarily sold online. Pre-orders for the production model, which will again be based around the prototype, will begin in the first half of 2025, with orders finalized by the end of the year. The First deliveries to North American buyers will take place in 2026.The cars will be built at Honda's North American facility.
